The Mast Brothers: Using Video to Stand Out

August 31, 2010 by Administrator (comments: 0)

We had the pleasure of sampling some unique Vosges Chocolates. Though I tried a few flavors, bacon being one of them, my preference was the Black Pearl Bar made with wasabi, ginger and black sesame seeds. It was intriguing to taste all those flavors. I did a little research on high end chocolate and came across The Mast Brothers, located near the Brooklyn Channel in New York. The Mast Brothers are New York City's only bean to bar chocolate maker and one of just a hand full of true artisan chocolate makers in the United States. I'm not a die hard chocolate person, but after watching the video produced by The Scout Magazine, It's hard to imaging not visiting their shop on my next trip to New York. The video does an amazing job telling us who The Mast Brothers are and how their meticulous, quite, dedicated personalities make them a cut above other chocolate makers.

Greater Westfield Chamber of Commerce Pancake Breakfast

July 16, 2010 by Alison (comments: 2)

Stevens 470 attended the annual Greater Westfield Chamber of Commerce Pancake Breakfast on July 8. The new setting on the lawn of the South Middle School was the perfect spot, with plenty of room and shady trees on the lawn. The rain and heat held off for the morning as well, making it a very enjoyable event. The delicious, fluffy pancakes were the perfect way to begin the day!

Watching Our Garden Grow

June 24, 2010 by Alison (comments: 0)

Garden, daylillies, pumpkin plant
It’s that time of year again, when the flowers are in full bloom and almost every day the mornings bring warm weather and sunshine. Our garden is flourishing with the beginnings of vegetables sprouting and the blossoms of daylillies. The aroma when you step outside our studio is delightful. The six raised beds consist of cherry and plum tomatoes, jalapeno and sweet peppers, lettuce, onions, pumpkins, squash, zucchini and fresh herbs.

Everyday we look forward to seeing how quickly the plants have grown and what new vegetable will soon be ready for picking. We have already been able to enjoy the lettuce and basil. Here are a few recent photos of our garden.

American Letterpress: Hatch Show Print

June 21, 2010 by Bob Burch (comments: 0)

This is a great video about Hatch Show Print, one of America's oldest letter press printing shops who's motto is "preservation through production". Every print they make is created by hand. They even use a rotary phone to call their customers to let them know the job is ready. Hatch Show Print keeps history alive by using the tools of the past. What I really find interesting is that there are so many retro ads and designs today in the market place. Most of them are now made digitally with new technology. Hatch Show Print does it the same way it was done over 100 years ago.

Objectified, a film by Gary Hustwit

June 16, 2010 by Bob Burch (comments: 0)

Friday I returned home from the studio to see a new Netflix DVD in my mailbox. The film, Objectified, by Gary Hustwit, is a feature-length documentary about our relationship with manufactured things. Through interviews with a robust list of today's designers, the film explores how objects become an extension of who we are as a people and individuals by looking at what we surround ourselves with. The documentary also takes a look at what objects will become in the future. An example that really stood out was one of digital cameras. Today's digital cameras are still shaped like film cameras, but do they really need to be?

Click here to visit the film's website. You can also see a high quality version of the trailer here.
